Pre-Workshop Intervention Exploration

A working understanding of common pregnancy/labor interventions prior to the workshop is helpful. Do some initial research into the following interventions. Use the areas below to collect your answers.* The first example is done for you.

Fetal Monitor (External)

Description:
Ultrasound devices held on the belly with elastic bands or adhesive tabs to monitor fetal heart rate and contraction frequency. Can be used continuously or intermittently.

Uses/Benefits:
Can be used to detect abnormal fetal heart rate or distress, identify premature labor, and assess the reaction of the baby to contractions (non-stress test). Tracks length and frequency of contractions.

Concerns/Risks:
EFM can limit the free movement and positioning of the client (particularly when used continuously), which can slow labor and increase discomfort. Positioning of client or baby can diminish effectiveness. Interpretation can be imprecise and somewhat subjective, requiring careful training and judgment. Studies show EFM has not reduced the incidence of cerebral palsy (its original intended application) but has dramatically increased cesarean rate.

Limit of position and movement (sometimes requiring client to remain in bed). Continuous monitoring may increase use of pain medication.
