Working with Survivors

with Andy Thyrring MA

An Advanced Workshop for Professional Doulas, presented by Rocky Mountain Doula

November 10, 2019

9 am – 1 pm at DU Campus, Denver

Whether or not a client discloses their experience, it is likely that you have worked with or are working with a survivor.

Research tells us that, in the United States, 1 in 3 women and 1 in 6 men have experienced some form of sexual violence in their lifetime. People of color, queer, and trans folks experience sexual violence at statistically higher rates. Trauma resulting from sexual and domestic violence can be held in the body and psyche, and impact a person in many facets of their life. When a survivor is moving through pregnancy and labor, their trauma memories can potentially be reactivated.

Doulas have the opportunity to shift this narrative to one of empowerment and resiliency.

Pregnant survivors can benefit greatly from trauma-informed birth support, improving their pregnancy, labor, and childbirth experience as well as long-term health outcomes. Trauma-informed care also can increase a survivor’s healing and promote wellbeing.

Join us to explore how you can enhance your practice to incorporate trauma-informed care.

“Working with Survivors” is adapted to your work as a doula. You can expect to learn:

– What is sexual violence and the impact of trauma
– The tenets of trauma-informed care
– How to adapt your work to be trauma-sensitive
– Strategies to support your clients who may be triggered or activated

This workshop builds upon your existing expertise, and will provide you with the skills and knowledge you need to understand the impact of trauma and how to enhance your practice to be more inclusive of clients with a trauma- survivor identity.

About our speaker:

Andy Thyrring

(she/her/they/them)

MA, Doctoral Candidate, Trauma Informed Yoga Instructor, Educator, & Doula

Hi, I’m Andy.

I have been working in the Denver community for about 8 years, doing a lot of what I love: creating inclusive, trauma-informed prevention and education programs and doing systems-level advocacy. I firmly believe all people are entitled to live full, empowered lives; this has driven my educational philosophy and advocacy style.

My Bachelors degree is in Health and Exercise Science, and my Masters is in Higher Education – specifically, social justice and trauma and recovery programs. I have completed my 200 Hours Training as a Yoga instructor, as well as certifications in Holistic Health Coaching and Trauma-Informed Yoga modalities. I am in the process of completing my certification in prenatal yoga and as well as pursuing my Doctorate in Trauma-Informed teaching practices.

I have enjoyed academics, however I have always wanted to be a doula. I completed my training program to be a Labor Doula with Ana M. Hill, Rocky Mountain Doula, and look forward to this journey in bringing my work in client-centered advocacy to the work of supporting pregnant people and their families. I am committed to providing inclusive services and affirm the unique experiences of the people I get to work with.

Outside of work, I enjoy breakfast, collecting records, and gardening. My dog Duncan and I also like to get out of the city and into the mountains to see the beautiful sites of Colorado.
